Day 40 27th May 2024


Today is the day we officially join our new group.

We met at a group meeting last night and gave our introductions.
It is only a group of 13 and 10 have come from a 10 day tour from Johannesburg through Botswana to Victoria Falls.

We are the intruders. 
I don’t feel we will be developing the friendships with this new lot that we have with the previous but it’s early days yet.

Our first stop today was at a wildlife conservation park supported by Intrepid.
As we drove in we saw our old truck and all the crew, so pleased to see everyone( it’s been 24 hours)

Really interesting presentation about the work this foundation does.
And we met Judge Judy who is tame vulture who has been living at the foundation for well over a decade.
She has a broken wing that hasn’t healed well so she can’t fly for mor than a meter or two.
She continually grooms herself when boys are around and tends to ignore we females





One of the ladies in our trip has a collapse as we are returning to the bus.
This lady didn’t realise she has to put up and down her own tent and doesn’t want to sleep on the ground.
So following her collapse which she recovered from, thank you to Dr Stu, there was a lot of conversation with head office about the situation.
This delayed us by at least half an hour or more and she’s still on the bus!!!

Lots of hugs again with our old crew and we head off to Hwange.
Stopped in the town of Hwange for some bits, so we hop of the stretch our legs.







Not a nice vibe in town and one chap in a store comments ‘don’t see many people of your colour here’
It’s ok, no need to comment, I am aware we are in Zimbabwe ..

Anyhoo, off we head and arrive at the Tuskers Campsite on the outskirts of the National Park.
Just gorgeous, overlooking a vast plain.











Settle in, lunch and off on another game drive.

I may have said I had enough elephants pics but clearly not.







Elephants, impalas, zebras, hippos crocs and a leopard in a tree!!!





This laidback beautiful creature just lay in a branch watching us all take so many photos and  also just watching her/him.





Home for spag bol and an evening around the fire.
It’s going to be a cold night.

Our guide , Eunice did mention that Friday night is party night in the village maybe loud ( small village, makes sense ) Ha, it was loud and didn’t stop till about 5.30 am. We didn’t mind too much tho as it was African music and settled us to sleep.  When we woke, we were able to settle again. Greeted by a couple of buckets for our wash, one hot , one cold for our wash outside. Stuart’s feet in the tub Eunice, me and my camp mum and granddaughter  Breakfast at Cecile’s house, another homestay mum brings the group together again and was loads of fun. Cooking breakfast We head off eventually and enjoy a morning driving through the most beautiful scenery. Photos won’t do it justice but a couple of tunnels and also high into the mountains. Down on level again it’s the land of orchards. Citrus farms with oranges mandarins, lemons. Also we spy mango and avocado trees and also papaya.. Lots of stalls along the road. Day 20. 7th May 2024

Today we will say goodbye to South Africa for a bit as we expect to cross the border into Namibia this afternoon. It’s a big drive, probably about 8-9 hours plus however long it takes to cross the border ( all dependent on the mood of the officials ) To get away by 7am we were up in the dark at about  5am to organise everything. Dismantling tent, organising breakfast, cleaning up and packing truck. Stopped for wee after about 2 and half hours and then lunch about the same time again. Lunch was in the town of Springbok, a pop up town that appeared after hundreds of miles of nothing. Except the ever changing scenery Made it to the border by about 4. Usual bureaucracy around border stops and all those official blokes looking grumpy and important. Received our passports back only for them to take them again and disappear into a little room and apparently contact Interpol with our details.😳 I think we should be ok ! Day 48 4th June 2024

Absolute heaven to lie in this morning, not sleep in but not getting up either except to make a cup of tea. Today is our last day as tourists here in Africa. We have organised a trip to Soweto ( south west town) with our hostel. It is here that the ‘blacks’ were first forcibly removed to and the beginning of Apartheid. Our guide, who also works at the hostel was bought up in Soweto so was a great source of info. We began the tour in Kliptown which is the poorest of the poor. Tiny houses made of whatever they can find, but we have seen a lot of these as we have travelled through Africa. They don’t own the land so are forever temporary shelters. They have communal water points and no sanitation. Electricity is available as a prepaid system which everyone bypasses. We also visited a kindergarten and youth centre here and with the help of many volunteers and qualified teachers they are doing great things. They are also involving the community, not just the kids.
